어린시절의 순수한 감정을 그리는 신철 작가
신철 작가의 작품에는 단발머리 소녀들이 등장한다. 남도 끝 청산도에서 유년시절을 보낸 작가는 남자 형제에게 희생하며 산 그 시절 누이들을 소환한다. 1960~70년대 소녀들은 가난 때문에 학교에 가지 않고 돈을 버는 경우가 많았다. 그 소녀들을 소중하게 생각했던 작가의 작업은 그들과 이 시대 또 다른 소녀들의 꿈과 사랑을 응원하는 의미가 되었다.
신철 작가는 가장 순수하고 투박한 붓질로, 간결한 형태로, 어린아이가 쓸 법한 쨍한 채도로. 착한 것이 지지받지 못하는 시대지만, 그는 순수로의 회귀를 기원하듯 애써 ‘서툰’ 그림을 그린다. 한편, 그림에 등장하는 새, 나비, 비행기, 자동차 등은 소녀의 꿈을 어딘가로 전달하는 수단을 상징한다. 작가는 작가의 그림을 통해 사람들이 행복하고 따뜻한 마음을 가지기를 바라며 그림을 그린다.
Shin Cheol who paints pure emotions of childhood memories.
His work features short-haired girls. When he was young, he lived in relatives house after his father died, and there were many sisters at the house. So he painted the *sisters, and since then, he has drew girls. In Korea, girls in the 1960s and 1970s often earned the money instead of going to school for their brothers because of poverty. The painter, who appreciated for that girls, paints with the hope that girls will now be blessed in reality.

When he paints, he cares about eye the most to express pure emotions, hopes and dreams. He maximizes beauty through simplified-shaped costumes, minimal facial expressions, poses, and colors of high chroma. Birds, butterflies, airplanes, and cars symbolize the means of delivery of girl’s dreams to somewhere. The artist with a warm heart who wants people to be happy and kind by looking at paintings is humble. And he always tries hard not to lose his first intention when painting.
