송계(松溪) 박영대 화백은 자타가 공인하는 ‘보리 작가’이다.
시골풍경 가득한 청보리밭의 형상부터 최근 들어 집중하고 있는 ‘태소’, ‘생명’, ‘생명의 씨앗’ 까지 전반적으로 보리로 부터 이어지는 작품들로 보리라는 핵심 주제를 기반으로 삶을 반추하고, 가치관을 형상적으로 구현해 내는 작가의 작업들이라고 할 수 있다.
그런 면에서 보리라는 소재와 평생 씨름하면서 화업을 일구어 온 박영대 화백의 대단한 열정과 집념을 느낄 수 있다.
특히 ‘태소’ 시리즈는 그 동안의 작업했던 작품들을 찢고 구기면서 새로운 작품으로 재탄생시키는 작업으로 매우 흥미롭다.
이에 대해 미술평론가 최병식은
“태소는 형태도 없고 발언의 구체성도 없지만 마치 황토로 대지를 갈아엎은 듯한 농밀한 ‘흙의 땀‘이 있는 흔적들로 쌓여진다. 수확을 하고 다시 땅을 고르는 농부와 같은 면모가 작업에서도 그대로 반영되고 있다고 볼 수 있다.” 고 하였다.
그야말로 보리가 없는 보리밭을 연상시키는 새로운 생명의 탄생으로 흙의 보리이다. 재료는 한지, 수묵, 한국화의 안료, 아크릴 등을 모두 사용하였다.
박영대 화백은 1942년 충북 청주 출생으로 홍익대학교 미술대학원(동양화 전공)을 졸업하였고, 현재 백석대학교 석좌교수이다.
국립현대미술관 백양회 공모전에서 ‘최고상’을 수상(1978)하였고, 일본 동경도미술관의 ‘그랑프리 수상’(1991), 일본 도쿄 오모리빌 아트리움에서 ‘사롱드브랑 대상’(2011)을 수상하였다. 영국, 미국, 이탈리아, 프랑스, 일본, 중국 등 국내 뿐 아니라 해외 미술관 및 갤러리에서 전시를 진행하여 인정받았고, 대영박물관(런던, 영국), 로고스갤러리(런던, 영국), 캐롤갤러리(뉴욕, 미국) 및 경기도미술관, 성남아트센터, 대청호미술관, 충북도청, 한국은행 등 많은 곳에 작품이 소장되었다.
한편, 2017년에 백석대학교 내 박영대 화백의 ‘보리생명미술관’이 개관하여 운영 중이다.
Park Young-dae is recognized as the ‘Barley Artist’.
Park Young-dae has createdhis art works by struggling with the subject of ‘barley’throughout his life with great passion and tenacity.
Recently, he is focusing on ‘Life,’ ‘The seed of life’ and other themes that have a cause-and-effect relationship intimately related to ‘barley.’ We can see Park’s faith and pure spiritual outcome as a devoted believer. His devotion in life is the background of the thematization of life, which is the meaning of the origin of mother earth. The other major key concept that we can find from Park’s work is that the rumination of life, the realization of shapes of values, which is the basis of the main theme – barley, that includes Korean traditional heritage, a review of the ages, the symbol of perseverance, though we have The HaHwe masks and Ink marks.The contextualization of Park’s thought, his spirit of art and his effort, the meaning of his works with durational realization are thought-provoking in the current Korean art world where discussions about the essentials of ‘plane’ and ‘self-identity’ are fading away. May the materialization ofhis formative language which originates from the essence of life be continuously developed through more experiments and inquisitive works.

Born in 1942 in Cheongju, Park Young-dae graduated from Hongik University Graduate School of Fine Arts(Department of Oriental Painting), He currently is a Chair professor of Baekseok University.
Park Young-dae received 'The First Prize' at Baekyang Association Competition from the National Museum of Contemporary Art(1978), 'the Tokyo-TEN Grand Prix' from Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum(1991) and 'the Grand Prize of Salon De Blanc Award' from Omori-vill Atrium in Tokyo(2011).
His practice was recognized in both Korea and abroad, with exhibitions including UK, USA, Italy, France, Japan and China. And His works are in the collections of the British Museum(London, UK), Logos Gallery(London, UK), carroll gallery(new york, USA), Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Seongnam Arts Center, Daecheong ho Museum of Modern Art, Chungbuk Provincial Government Office, the Bank of Korea and more.
In 2017, 'The Barley Life Art Museum' by Park Young-dae in Baekseok University was opened and is in operation.
