직지를 통해 비움과 지움의 동양정신을 구현하는 신용일 작가
직지심체요절은 현존하는 세계최초의 금속활자본이다.
1956년생 신용일 작가는 흙 주머니를 이용하여 직지의 글자를 적으며 오랜 세월을 보냈다. 신용일 작가의 작업은 매우 고단하다. 그는 작업을 통해 ’공(空)_완전한 비움‘을 이루려한다. 이것은 직지와 밀접한 관련이 있는 메시지이다.
그의 작업은 하루 종일 손에 쥐가 나도록 공들여 글자를 적고 한 순간에 다시 흙으로 덮어버리는 행위의 반복이다. 그러다가 어느 순간 천으로 표면을 문지르면 감춰져있던 글자가 희미하게 드러난다. 그는 이러한 고단한 작업을 하면서 인생에 대해 생각한다. 그리고 오래 공들인 것이라도 어느 순간이 되면 버려야 하는 것이 인생이고, 덜어내야 하는 것이 인생이라고 이야기한다.
작업 하나 하나마다 부단한 땀과 노력이 담긴 신용일 작가의 작품은 가만히 바라보고 있노라면 절로 숙연해진다.

His work is a very arduous process. his works is Sunyata, or a perfect state of emptiness, a message closely related to that contained in Jikji.

His work is a repetition of the act of carefully writing letters on canvas all day long and covering them with dirt again in an instant. Then, at some point, when He rub the surface with a cloth, the hidden letters are revealed faintly.
He thinks about life while doing these hard work. He said that at some point in life, he will be a time when you have no choice but to throw away even the most elaborate things and it is life.
So, His work, which contains constant sweat and effort for each work, I'm getting solemn When I look at it.
