시간의 연속성과 축적을 초현실적인 공간구성으로 표현하는 작가 조현애.
조현애 작가는 초현실적인 공간구성으로 그 안에서 시간의 연속성과 축적되어 온 시간의 두께를 표현하고자 한다. 조현애 작품의 첫 느낌은 이차원의 평면 위에 시간과 공간을 뛰어넘어 재현되고 있는 표현들이 마치 타임머신을 타고 시공간을 초월하는 기분을 느끼게 해준다고 할 수 있다. 하지만 작가가 이야기하는 시간의 무게는 결코 가볍지가 않다.
시간은 단순히 흐르는 것이 아니며 사라지지 않고 겹겹이 축적되어진 것으로 그 안에 전체 기억, 흔적, 꿈, 기대가 녹아있다고 할 수 있다. 그래서 조현애 작가는 시간을 두껍다고 이야기하며, 시간의 두께를 어떻게 측정할 수 있을지에 대해 끊임없이 질문을 던지며 작품을 만든다. 작품에 나타나는 이미지는 서로 다른 공간과 시간에 존재했던 오브제들을 동시에 또는 비현실적으로 배열함으로써 시공을 초월한 초현실적 공간을 극대화함과 동시에 무한한 공간의 은유 역할을 한다. 즉 과거, 현재, 미래를 아우르는 현실과 가상의 경계가 없는 공간과 과거, 현재, 미래의 모호한 경계가 있는 시간을 구성한다.
Cho Hyun-ae tries to express the continuity of time and the thickness of time accumulated in it through a surreal spatial composition. The first feeling of her work is that the expressions that are being reproduced beyond time and space on a two-dimensional plane make you feel like you are transcending time and space on a time machine. However, the weight of time that she talks about is by no means light.
The time is not a mere flow or does not disappear and It has whole memories, traces, dreams and expectations that are wrinkled in layers. It is thick. How can we measure the thickness of time? The artist creates the works by considering such a question. The images appearing in works maximize surrealistic space beyond both time and space and also act as the metaphor of infinite space, by simultaneously or impractically arranging objects which have existed in different spaces and times. In other words, they compose the space without a boundary between reality and virtuality, which covers the past, the present and the future, and the time with an ambiguous boundary among the past, the present and the future.
